Infectious
Created for Doris’s first solo exhibition in 2012, Infectious (above) explores conformity and the pressure to adopt and transmit social norms and trends. The multiple cellular forms within these objects draw inspiration from natural phenomena such as viruses and lichen.
The pieces are intended to depict the following ideas:
Hierarchy - complying with authority and rules to become successful and achieve promotion
Homogeneous - a loss of diversity, resulting in predictable uniformity
Spin - presenting a story in a particular way to convince others
Maverick - the more unconventional person who stands out in a group
Submission - giving in to pressure and suppressing one’s own ideas to accept another’s
Valentine
The Valentine series (above) is an extension of Doris’s Infectious exhibition work. These rose-like pieces evolved from a body of work based on conformity and pressure to comply with social norms. Valentine’s Day sprang to mind.
